Diagnostic yield of capillary compared to venous glucose in the diagnosis of hypoglycorrhachia in children: A prospective, observational study

IntroductionThe ratio of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) glucose and blood is major relevance, conducting to the diagnosis hypoglycorrhachia, which a sign neuroinfection, as well number neurological diseases genetic or neoplastic etiology. Glucose in capillary sample (glucometry) low cost, readily available technique, compared venous glucose. This study aims compare glucometry hypoglycorrhachia pediatric population.MethodsProspective cross-sectional based on data obtained from lumbar punctures period February 2017 January 2019 specialized institution Colombia.Results97 patients were analyzed, aged 1 month 17 years old, mean 7.67 years, 52 (53.61%) female. 26 (26.8%) diagnosed with hypoglycorrhachia. Pearson correlation coefficient for absolute was 0.54, 0.55 ratios CSF glucose/venous glucose/glucometry, support linear between variables both, values ratios. Intraclass calculated ratios, 0.52, revealing moderate agreement among tests. Sensitivity specificity gold standard are 73.1% 60.6% respectively; whereas predictive positive value (PPV) negative (NPV), 40.4% 86.0%.ConclusionGlucometry cannot replace children.
